The reserve has some of the best natural forest cover in Kainuu. It is located near the eastern border of Finland and is part of the Friendship Park. It is a tapestry of different types of mires, old spruce forests draped with beard lichens, lush stream banks, and small lakes and ponds. Hunting used to be a very common sport as well as a means of livelihood in the history.
