Going to the Sun Road, Montana

No road like it

09/22/2016 - 12:39
My in-laws recently treated me and my wife to a Red Bus Tour through Glacier National Park, including the entire Going to the Sun Road. Whether on a red bus, driving yourself, or riding along with friends, this is such a unique road to travel. And if you're on your own, take the whole day. Hike the Loop Trail, or any of the trails near Logan Pass, stop at St. Mary's Lake, look for bears and big horn sheep...soak it in. Just don't sit on the right side of the car going up.

Oregon Coast, Tillamook, Oregon

All the bests things

09/22/2016 - 12:34
This is not big reveal, but worth reminding: the Oregon Coast is special. Road biking Highway 101 (and jumping off it towards Cape Meares for example) is sometimes dicey but always worth it. Affordable deep sea fishing day-trips, exceptional hikes, and in Tillamook specifically: ice cream and cheese. Bike, hike, fish, eat. With amazing scenery. And then drive down the highway, look at the Pacific, and repeat.

Venice, Italy

Get Lost in Venice...

09/22/2016 - 12:29
I read this in one of my guidebooks before I went: "The best thing to do in Venice is get lost in Venice." Seemed like a ridiculous plan, but it turns out to be true. I've been twice now, and both times I intentionally wandered by myself. Once slowly and with my camera, the other in the early morning and in my running shoes. Both times I saw (and smelled) things I otherwise wouldn't have on the beaten down tourist piazzas and streets/canals. Venice is a maze of intrigue and history, and getting lost is worth it. It's a tiny island and you always hit the main path at some point.

Ang Thong National Marine Park

Paddling, Snorkeling, and Hiking Pristine Thailand

09/22/2016 - 12:23
Ang Thong is a jewel of Thailand. I made a day-trip here from Ko Pha Ngan, and it was arguably my best day in the country. Arguable only because I had many great days. Snorkeling in warm waters, opportunities for kayaking under and between limestone cliffs, an easy but exceptional hike to a point where all the park is in view, and monkeys with babies in their arms in the treetops on the way down. Go!

Italy: The Dolomites

Hiking from Castelrotto

09/22/2016 - 12:19
My wife and I spent a glorious day hiking in the Dolomites above Castelrotto - on the "Witch's Trail" if I remember correctly. We took a pristine and roomy gondola up to the trailhead, hiked among Alpine cows and (yes, with bells!), shared a strudel at a classic trailside cabin, and looked down upon this picturesque town from above. The food in town, wine, and Alpine village life was also exceptional and we've been dying to go back to the Dolomites ever since. And we will.
