Matty Kirkland
Austin-Lehman Adventures Guide

Growing up with eight siblings, Matty was destined to be a people person! He settled in Big Sky, MT in 1995 and began guiding rafting trips and backcountry skiing before joining up with Adventures Plus (the precursor to Austin-Lehman Adventures) in 1998 to lead trips in Alaska.  Guiding is Matty’s sole profession and he still loves being the “Facilitator of Fun” after so many years. He is passionate when it comes to learning about each area he guides. He loves showing people the finer details and explaining the history of a location, watching guests’ eyes widen with excitement. Matty takes special care planning each day and outing for every group, always keeping an eye peeled for something to point out or the best place for a WOW. Matty admits that it is deeply satisfying to have so much passion for his work and feels he has the perfect job because it allows him to travel, learn, and live an active lifestyle.

Her huge love for guiding and working in the outdoors has fostered 14 years of guiding Austin-Lehman trips which have taken her from Canada all the way through the Western United States to Mexico and Belize. For the past seven years, Marcy has been guiding with her husband, Carl. Together with their young son Otis, they spend their winters in Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca, Mexico and their summers in Calgary.

Myths & Mountains

When traveling on a Myths and Mountains Photographic Exploration, not only will you benefit from the knowledge of our experienced local guides, but you will be accompanied by the talented professional travel writer and photographer, Bill Chapman. Bill has spent much of his life wandering the world and photographing indigenous cultures and wild places, particularly along the fabled roads and trails of the Himalayan region. He is the author of The Face of Tibet, a photographic and written chronicle of his travels in remote regions of Tibet. A passion for photography, with a sense of wonder and admiration for the beauty of nature and the people of the world, is what drives Bill's spirit of adventure. As he wrote: "Photographic images are frozen moments that illustrate our relationship with the places we visit and the people we meet, and remind us of the emotions we felt. By developing our artistic use of the camera, we gain new insights that lead to an even deeper appreciation of our travels, and help us capture the spirit of place."

The Wayfarers
jana

Jana Kotalikova, PhD
Walk Leader: The Czech Republic

I studied at Charles´ University in Prague and I started guiding in 1992, when a number of English speaking visitors, friends and their friends, mostly from Great Britain, visited Prague for the first time and needed assistance. I felt from the beginning that I did useful work, as they didn´t understand one word of Czech, and during the first years after the "Velvet Revolution" in 1989 nothing was the same as in the Western countries. I like to help my clients to get around and see as much as possible, eat as well as possible and understand as much as possible about the country, which is now much closer to the EEC.

I work as a guide only occasionally, as a second job, and I have a regular job at the National Institute for the Care of Historical Monuments. Therefore guiding is always a refreshing change for me and not a routine as for those who do it every day!

"A moose!" exclaimed my 10-year-old son Matt, "A real moose! We screeched to a halt along the side of the road in Grand Teton National Park..."

"We just wanted to say thanks for everything. Our tour last week on the Romantic Radeln was a vacation we'll never forget. It really was everything we had hoped for and then some! Martha and Loek were superb guides as well as wonderful people. Martha led us through wonderful multi-course meals. She fed us just the right amount of historic and cultural information about where we were and where we were going. Loek was amiable and personable. We found his humor delightful. Both guides were always there when needed. All of our friends (and anyone else who will listen) will hear about how great an outfit you folks are. Thanks again."
