-There are areas in Northern Chile where no rainfall has ever been recorded.  The Atacama Desert in Chile is the driest place on earth.  Most places in the desert only get .004 inches of rainfall a year while other places have not seen rain for over 400 years. The desert runs along the west coast of South America.

-Charles Darwin created the theory of evolution while visiting the Galapagos Island.  He visited the island during an 1831-1836 and his observations of how various animal species had adapted to life on the islands contributed to his ground-breaking theory of evolution.  Darwin's controversial book, "The Origin of Species", was the one of the first to suggest that living things evolved from a common ancestor.

-Ecuador is the leading exporter of bananas.

-In 1914, one of the world’s largest oil fields was discovered below Venezuela’s Lake Maracaibo.  Oil derricks scatter the lake today and wealth from oil exportation has helped to make Venezuela one of the richest countries in Latin America.

-Although Easter Island is located 2300 miles west of South America in the Pacific Ocean and considered to be part of Oceania, the small volcanic island was annexed by Chile in 1888.
