Peru Family Adventure: Machu Picchu and Lake Titicaca

This active Peru adventure designed for active families and travelers of all ages, ventures high into the Andes to a remote and spectacular Inca trail to Machu Picchu. Our day hike on one of the most beautiful protected remnants of Inca trail leads to the recently discovered complex of Llactapata. Our expert Wildland guide takes us bushwhacking with machete in-hand to uncover hidden ruins, just like Hiram Bingham and other expedition leaders who searched for lost Inca cities. We gain a deep understanding of life in the Andes by visiting indigenous Quechua families in their home. Side-by-side, we work in their fields and participate in ancient ceremonies like a “pago-a-la-tierra” (payment to the Earth), reminding us of our common roots to the Apus (mountain spirits) and Pachamama (Mother Earth). Discover colorful market towns in the Sacred Valley of the Incas where we learn about sustainable agriculture though traditional methods of farming, Andean weaving and pottery making, visit an alpaca and llama farm, and sample traditional Andean cuisine. On this Peru family adventure we climb a rock wall in the Sacred Valley and fly back down on a long zip line, mountain bike downhill from a high pass to our camp in the jungle and hike among ancient Inca ruins and terraced farmlands. At Lake Titicaca, we spend one night in a local village on Taquile Island where we kayak, meet with weavers and share stories before finally returning to the capital city of Lima to explore the historic colonial districts by bicycle.

The Loire, France's most fabled river, is our companion for this seven-day Walk through the historic garden of France.  Crossing undulating countryside and fertile riverbanks, we encounter a royal abbey, privately owned châteaux, vineyards and orchards, underground passageways and troglodyte caves. We dine on traditional local produce, visit a mushroom farm, sample the sparkling and still wines of Saumur, play locals at the ancient game of boules de fort and enjoy a delightful dinner on board a traditional barge on the river Loire as we watch the sun set.  In Chinon we discover a medieval fortress where Joan of Arc met Charles VII and we visit Fontevraud, the royal necropolis of the Plantagenet family: Henry II, Eleanor of Aquitaine and Richard the Lion-Heart, and the only mixed monk and nun community in France. Great Cities of the Maya

Take a fascinating journey through the 2,000 year old history of the Mayan people, from the ancient days to the present. As you explore the ruins of the great Mayan cities of Tikal, Palenque, Yaxchilan, Bonampak and Piedras Negras, our guide highlights the history, legends and archeological finds of these ancient civilizations and the unique aspects of each: climb to the top of the impressive grand temples and pyramids of Tikal as you are “serenaded” by the howler and spider monkeys who live in the surrounding jungle canopy, and marvel at the intricate paintings at Bonampak which are still intact today. You learn about the way of life and customs of the modern Mayan people through authentic interactions: take in the scene of colonial Antigua’s atmospheric central park; enjoy lunch with a Mayan family in Xenotox; and learn about traditional weaving methods from a women's cooperative. After exploring, you spend the evenings in historical boutique hotels and native-style jungle lodges.
