New Zealand - Spectacular South Island
The Wayfarers

New Zealand - Spectacular South Island

The stunning scenery of New Zealand's South Island is the backdrop for this Walk through the landscape that inspired Peter Jackson's film trilogy 'The Lord of the Rings'. Beginning our journey in the Queen Charlotte Sounds, we retrace the steps of Captain Cook, who landed in these Sounds in 1770. We witness basking seals at Kaikoura, close to the Southern Alps and sample fresh seafood from this quaint sea town. At Christchurch, we explore the Summit walkway on the Cashmere Hills, overlooking this beautiful city and meander along the pretty Flowers track set high above the seaside town of Sumner. There is also time to visit Christchurch's cultural precinct which contains art galleries, museum and an artist's market.

On the West Coast, we explore lush rainforests, river tracks through primeval landscapes and admire the strange, magical pancake rock formations at Punakaiki. The majesty and beauty of Franz Josef and Fox Glaciers heralds the end of our stay on the West Coast and we travel east to Wanaka to experience tranquil lakeside walks and also hike to the top of Mount Iron for unsurpassed views of Aspiring National Park. As our journey draws to a close, we visit Arrowtown, an old gold-mining town, walking the shady, river track. Then, we experience the dramatic landscape of Queenstown, surrounded by towering mountain ranges, taking in the Sunshine Valley walk, which follows the lake's shore. Our final destination takes us to the wonderful beech forest walk which is the Routeburn Track. Here, we sample a part of the walk and picnic in pristine surroundings, where forest, mountains and babbling rivers are our companions.

Into the Wilds of the Osa Peninsula

Venture deep into the heart of Corcovado National Park to explore and discover the vast, pristine rainforest wilderness of Costa Rica’s remote Osa Peninsula, identified by National Geographic as “One of the most biologically intense places on the planet.” Based from the premier ecolodges of La Paloma and Lapa Rios located on each side of Corcovado National Park, we hike, kayak, snorkel, swim, and explore miles of wilderness trails and waterways among the rainforests, rivers, waterfalls and pristine tropical beaches of the Osa. Everywhere colorful scarlet macaws fly overhead and monkeys cavort in the forest canopy. We spot spectacular tropical bird species and are always on the lookout for tapir, anteaters, coatimundi, peccary herds and other wildlife. We travel by boat along the wilderness coastline to reach the Sirena Ranger Station where jungle cats including puma and jaguar roam, and then either hike or fly out of this jungle wilderness.  Local research biologists share firsthand the Yaguara Wild Cats Conservation Project supported by proceeds from your trip to protect the neotropical felines of the Osa.   We engage local people who share their stories about life in the wilds of Costa Rica. A great adventure for teens and young adults!

Falkland Islands, South Georgia and Antarctic Expedition
Wildland Adventures

Falkland Islands, South Georgia and Antarctic Expedition

On this far-reaching expedition to Antarctica via the Falkland Islands and South Georgia Island, you will revel in 18 eye-popping days of exploration. Busybody penguins in rookeries by the thousands, behemoth icebergs reflecting startling greens and blues, humpback whales feeding on krill and of course the continent-sized sweeping ice sheet of Antarctica. Exploring the Falkland Islands we will find a relatively warm climate where an abundance of unusual wildlife thrives including sixty species of migratory birds and the rare rockhopper penguin. Continuing through the Antarctic convergence, our Antarctic adventure voyage takes us to the pristine island of South Georgia, featuring towering glacier-covered mountains and spectacular wildlife sightings including rookeries of the pompous king penguin, several seal species and the laughable macaroni penguin.  South Georgia is also the final resting place of Antarctic explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton.  We explore the old whaling station at Grytviken and visit his grave nearby.

Arriving at the Antarctica peninsula, we are greeted by thousands of icebergs that look like modern art sculptures lining the bays of Paradise Harbour or Hope Bay. Meanwhile an overwhelming profusion of wildlife is on display from penguins torpedoing through the water to predatory leopard seals staking their claim on ice floes. We hope to stand on the mainland of the White Continent itself. From this vantage point, it is easy to understand why legendary explorers such as Roald Amundsen and Sir Ernest Shackleton were so captivated by this inhospitable region.
